Italian Moka

Regardless of what the future holds for the Moka coffee maker … it will always occupy a privileged place in the pantheon of coffee making devices in Argentina.

Before its introduction, coffee was consumed more in public than in private spaces and was only drunk in elite circles. La Moka brought espresso-style coffee to consumers around the world and influenced the way we prepare, extract and serve coffee.

Below, we show how you can brew French Press either with utensils found in every kitchen, or top notch tools for home barista pros.

What you need:

  1. 4-cup Italian moka

  2. Fine ground coffee (as table salt)

  3. Cup / mug

What you can add:

  1. Grinder

  2. Scale

Recipe

Step 1

Boil some hot water in a separate kettle. We do this to prevent the moka’s temperature from getting too hot and cooking the coffee, giving it a metallic taste.

Step 2

Add the hot water and fill until the line on the bottom of the coffee maker.

Step 3

Insert the filter basket.

Step 4

Fill the basket with 2-3 tablespoons of ground coffee (fine as salt) setting it slightly in a mound.

If you have a scale, weigh 17 grams and grind it fine.

Level the surface with your finger and brush loose particles on the top edge of the filter basket.

Step 5

Screw the top and bottom together. Use hot pads and don’t over-squeeze.

Step 6

Place the moka pot on the stove until the water has risen into the upper chamber. Delicioso!
