Hario V60
The Hario V60 is a pour-over coffee maker, and it’s Checha’s (our co-founder) favorite. She says it is convenient and not too pricey.
The V60 was invented in Japan by Hario in 2004. Its name comes from its distinctive V shape and 60º angle, and it comes in different materials: glass, plastic, metal and our favorite: ceramic.
Below, we show how you can brew HARIO V60 either with utensils found in every kitchen, or top notch tools for home barista pros.
What you need:
Hario V60 coffee maker
Hario V60 paper filter
Medium ground coffee
Hot water
Cup / mug
Stopwatch
What you can add:
Gooseneck kettle (or “kettle”)
Grinder
Scale
Thermometer
– Ratio 1/15 of coffee / water:18 grams of coffee and 270 grams of hot water (at 96 C).
– Medium grind (a little finer than coarse salt).
– Brewing time: 02:30 minutes.
Recipe
Step 1
Boil the water and let it steep for 60-70 seconds.
If you have a thermometer, check until water reaches 96 degrees.
Step 2
Place the filter paper and pour in water to pre-heat the container and eliminate unwanted paper flavors. Remove the water.
Step 3
If you are using ground coffee, serve 3 tablespoons.
If you have a scale, weigh 18 grams of coffee and grind it with a slightly finer texture than coarse salt.
Step 4
If you are using ground coffee, serve 3 tablespoons.
If you have a scale, weigh 18 grams of coffee and grind it with a slightly finer texture than coarse salt.
Step 5
Pour the coffee grounds onto the filter paper and gently shake the coffee maker so that the coffee settles evenly.
Step 6
Time 00:00 – 00:30
Pre-infusion: set the timer on and start pouring in some water until the coffee gets wet (this process is called Blooming *).
With the scale you can measure to pour 40 ml of water. Let it sit until the timer hits 30 seconds.
* Blooming: It is the process in coffee brewing in which the gasses from the coffee are released as the water hits the grinds. It causes the grinds to grow & rise. The CO2 that is inside the bean is purged out and replaced with the water and begins the brewing / extraction process.
Step 7
Time 00:30 – 02:30
Starting at 30 seconds, start pouring in the rest of the water, drawing spirals from the center to the edge at each pour, to soak up all the coffee particles. Pour a total water of 230 ml for about two minutes. Remove the coffee filter and voila, the coffee is ready!
