Aeropress
What you need
Aeropress
AeroPress paper or metal filter
Spoon (the AeroPress comes with a specific one, but any tablespoon will do)
Medium-fine ground coffee (about the granularity of table salt)
Hot water
Cup / mug
Stopwatch (you can use the one on your cell phone)
What you can add (for a coffee worthy of a barista):
Coffee grinder
Coffee scale
Thermometer
Recipe
Ratio 1/16 of coffee / water: 17 grams of coffee (3 level tablespoons) and 276 grams of water (a bit more than a cup)
Medium-fine ground coffee (about the granularity of table salt)
Brewing time: 2 minutes.
Step 1
Boil the water and let it sit for about 60 seconds. Ideally, the water should be between 93 and 95 degrees. If you have a thermometer, now is the time to use it!
Step 2
Put your AeroPress in the “inverted position”, without the lid (see photo). Reversing the standard position prevents the coffee from seeping through the filter before it is ready.
Step 3
Spoon your coffee grounds into the AeroPress chamber and gently swirl it back and forth to settle the grounds.
If you have a scale, the exact amount recommended for a cup is 17 grams of medium-fine ground coffee (the granularity of table salt).
Tip: Use whole bean coffee for the freshest cup possible.
Step 4
Spoon your coffee grounds into the AeroPress chamber and gently swirl it back and forth to settle the grounds.
If you have a scale, the exact amount recommended for a cup is 17 grams of medium-fine ground coffee (the granularity of table salt).
Tip: Use whole bean coffee for the freshest cup possible.
Step 5
Time: 0:00 – 00:30
Start the timer and wet the coffee evenly over the ground coffee (this process is called Blooming *).
With the scale you can measure to pour exactly 175 ml of water.
Let it sit until the timer hits 30 seconds.
* Blooming: Is the part of the coffee brewing process in which the gasses from the coffee are released as the water hits the grounds. It causes the grounds to grow & rise. The CO2 that is inside the bean is purged out and replaced with the water and begins the brewing / extraction process.
Step 6
Time: 00:30 – 01:30
Use the remainder of the hot water to fill the chamber. Or if you have a scale, until it reads 276 ml.
Using a spoon or the AeroPress paddle, gently stir the coffee.
Pause until the timer strikes one minute.
Step 7
Time: 00:30 – 01:30
Place the lid (with filter) firmly on top of the compartment and twist to secure it.
Carefully flip the AeroPress over and place it on top of your mug.
Press the plunger down firmly for 30 seconds until you hear a hiss (from the air coming out of the compartment).
Remove the lid and discard the grounds and filter.
